Of course what these two men did twenty odd years ago is tasteless and a sad indicator of how ignorant and insensitive even a future young governor could (and perhaps still can) be. But as brighter men in public life, have they ever done anything personally or supported any regulations or laws that put people of color at a disadvantage? Have they not in fact consistently taken the opposite tack, always coming down on the side of positive action to minimize the effects of racism inherent in this country?
If we were to unload all available bile and contempt on these two men, what will be left when confronted, as we are again and again, by the voting record of Justice Clarence Thomas who has chosen to deal with the racism he doubtless experienced over the years by simply going over to the enemy. His unconscious figures that if he becomes one of them they can’t hurt him any more.
I do understand this dynamic but think of the damage he’s done to the men and women who share the melanin in his skin, who had hoped for if not a voice on their behalf then at least a fair shake. They’ll never get one. Not from him. Seems to me that’s what we should be upset about, watching this relatively young justice continue to trample on those Americans who most need his helping hands.
